Puppymills

I feel that it is within myself as a dog trainer to educate the public about puppy mills. A lot of people are still unsure where puppy mills dogs are sold.

-ANY pet store where there are puppies

-Backyard breeders. If you cannot see the mother of the pups DO NOT BUY ONE

These puppies that are sold in pet store's and in the backyards of homes are sick dogs in more ways then just physically. The people that breed the dogs are only looking for money and they interbreed the dogs which leads to horrible physical deformities, behavioural problems because the pup was taken away from it's mother and littermates too early, genetic behaviour problems such as fearfulness or shyness which can lead to an aggressive dog towards humans and dogs.

Not to mention the horror that the parents go through.

Rule of thumb when setting out to add a member to the family.

-If you cannot meet the mother and father (mainly the mother though) WALK AWAY! They either don't have the mother on sight (puppymill pup) or they don't want you to meet her as they are trying to hide something. If you do meet the breeding pair, are they both friendly?

-Ask if the parents have been checked for genetic predisposed illnesses

-If something was to happen and you needed to give the pup away would they take him or her back?

- Never buy a pup if they are willing to part with it before 8 weeks. A good breeder will not let the pups go until 16 weeks and some 6 months.

-Do research on what breed of dog you are interested in and make sure it fits your lifestyle.

Reality Vs T.V.

Lets be honest here, we all watch t.v. especially programs that we're interested in, which if you have a dog with a problem you're probably going to watch a dog training show. The important thing to remember about these shows is....they're shows. If you had eight plus hours a day to dedicate training to your dog, of course your dog would fixed, that would be great! 99% of the population doesn't have eight or more hours each day to give to their dog.

Going in and dedicating yourself to a training method is the first step to changing your dog's behaviour. A dog's behaviour doesn't change overnight, it took "x" amount of months/years to create this behaviour so it will take time to extinguish it and teach an alternate behaviour.
